This week we are doing things a little differently because I have put together a little mini-series for you all surrounding the topic of websites and how they can help you build your business online.  You will get a new concept each day on how you can either get started with your own website if you haven’t already or how you can build up your existing site and get more out of it.

In this episode, I tell my personal story of how I got started as a web designer, how you can become a freelancer too, and the pros and cons to everything that is included with this business.

Key Concepts Discussed In This Episode:

How I personally got started as a web designer.  Although looking back on my past and the events that led up to me owning my own business as a web designer looks pretty difficult, it is pretty typical for anyone first starting out with their own freelancing business.  I did a lot of work for free and added a lot of deep discounts but this led to referrals, experience, and opportunities.  Listen to the episode to hear my full story on how I got started with my very first client and what I did to learn from that experience and build my initial business.

How can you get started as a web designer?  If you are interested in being a freelancer and you have a skill you know people will pay for, or if you want to be a web designer, there is a lot to learn but it is completely doable!

Ideas For Getting Started As A Freelancer:

  • Do free work (in the beginning)
  • Give some deep discounts to those who can open up opportunities for you
  • Be open to doing “loss leads” to first start up your business
  • Keep learning and growing in your industry

From what I’ve learned so far with my web design work, it’s that there will always be someone who knows more than you… But there are even more than that who know less.

Benefits and downfalls of being a web designer.  There are quite a few pros and cons to being a web designer (or business owner in general), here are a few:

Pros Of Owning A Business

  • You are your own boss
  • Your work is completely scalable
  • Work when you want to
  • Work from home (or wherever you’d like)

Cons Of Owning A Business

  • Paying taxes ):
  • Don’t always know the next step to take
  • Everything is entirely up to you, and you alone

So what do you think? Is being a freelancer / web designer / business owner right for you?  Be sure to take into account all of the information and skills that it takes to build a business from scratch.
