6 Reasons Instagram Hashtags Aren’t Working For You

1. Your account is set to “private” setting

Hashtags (as of the date of this episode being published) only work for accounts that are public, not private.  They are meant to help you gain exposure and add to the community content on Instagram, so really, why would they work if you wanted your content to be private?

2. You are using the WRONG ONES

Be sure to take the time to research the right hashtags that appeal to your target audience and attract them to you.  Want more help figuring out which ones are the best hashtags to use for your specific business?  Watch video one of the Instagram Account Fixer Upper video training series where I walk you through how to find, pick, and use the right hashtags to gain maximum exposure for your business (and it’s completely free!).

3. Aren’t using enough of them

Instagram allows you to use a maximum of 30 hashtags per post that you publish, you should be using all 30 of them to get as much exposure as you possibly can for every single post.

4. You’re using restricted and / or banned hashtags

If you use hashtags that others have also used to share inappropriate content, Instagram flags these hashtags and sometimes even shuts them down so they don’t work.  Meaning, if you use them on your post, they likely aren’t working for you because the feeds are down.

5. You’re deleting and re-adding them multiple times

There is a strategy that some “Instagram Guru’s” claims to work incredibly well — when it couldn’t be farther from the truth.  They recommend to add as many hashtags as you can to a post, publish the post, and then very soon after delete the hashtags and re-add brand new ones to the very same post to get seen as many times as possible.  I know it might seem like a great way to get as many eyeballs on your content as possible but I’m sorry to say, it doesn’t work.

6. … They are working, you just don’t realize it (;

Test, re-test, and keep testing.  Finding the right hashtags can be a working progress — even at 10k+ followers, I still test different hashtags for my specific audience and change them up every now and then.  Keep at it, you’ll figure out which ones are right for you and for your ideal, target audience.
